Beyond the Main Tournament: Where to Look for the Next Goalkeeper Lesson

The Netherlands and Finland won M20 Championship titles as attention moved towards the under-18 summer events. A viewing guide for coaches. Week to 27 July 2026.

While Hungary’s Men’s 20 EHF EURO title drew attention, two other under-20 competitions ended with their own celebrations. The Netherlands beat Estonia 34:28 in the M20 EHF Championship final in Kosovo. Finland beat Slovakia 30:26 in the other final, also held in Pristina, Kosovo. The EHF reported both titles on 20 July. EHF Championship finals report.

Those results raise a useful question for a coach looking for video: are you choosing matches because they feature famous names, or because they show a problem your goalkeeper needs to solve?

A less familiar match can be more useful

Consider a goalkeeper struggling to find a position after the ball moves from the backcourt to the wing. A clip of that exact situation can be valuable even if neither team is a title favourite. The relevance comes from the decision you can study.

My coaching approach is to start with that question and choose the footage afterwards. Follow the ball movement, pause before the release and ask where the goalkeeper has arrived. Then watch the shot. The exercise becomes a comparison between expectation and what actually happened.

Avoid deciding that a goalkeeper at a less prominent tournament must have simpler or less effective technique. Competition labels do not explain an individual movement. Watch what is visible and consider the situation.

The summer gives viewers another starting point

The Men’s 18 EHF EURO in Serbia was scheduled for 29 July–9 August. The IHF Women’s Youth Under-18 World Championship in Romania was also scheduled for 29 July–9 August. These were upcoming events at the date of this edition. EHF M18 competition and IHF women’s U18 event.

Choose a goalkeeper and a single viewing question before the next match begins. You might follow positioning on wing attacks, recovery after a save attempt, or communication with the central defenders.

Write down the match and time of each relevant example. Include shots that went in as well as saves, so the review does not become a collection of successes with the difficult situations removed.

At the end, describe one pattern and one thing you still cannot explain. That gives your next viewing session a purpose—and gives a younger goalkeeper a way to learn from the summer without needing to watch everything.
