Matej Mandić stopped the first shot he faced in Magdeburg’s Super Cup meeting with Füchse Berlin on 22 August. Within five minutes, he had made three saves. Magdeburg moved into an early lead and went on to win 38:31.

The club’s report also identifies Dominik Kuzmanović’s contribution after he came on for the second half. The result gave Magdeburg their first Super Cup title in 25 years. SC Magdeburg match report.

The opening saves are a useful place to start watching. They are not a complete description of either goalkeeper’s match. Even a striking percentage from five minutes covers only a handful of attempts.

Another trophy needed seven-metre throws

The women’s Super Cup remained level at 22:22 after regular time. Blomberg-Lippe beat Borussia Dortmund 26:24 after the shoot-out, with Lara Lepschi making a decisive contribution in goal. The match report also highlighted the work of Nicole Roth and Dortmund’s Sarah Wachter during the contest. Super Cup report via Sport1.

Magdeburg’s story began with early momentum. Blomberg’s ended with a tightly defined contest between shooter and goalkeeper. Those are different demands, even though both produced a trophy photograph.

Coaching perspective: prepare the situation you want to improve

A goalkeeper who needs a better start to matches may need a warm-up that leads naturally into reading live attacks. A goalkeeper working on seven-metre throws needs repetitions that preserve the shooter’s choices and the goalkeeper’s opportunity to read them.

That is a practical distinction to test in your own training, rather than a claim about how these clubs prepared. A drill should keep the important information from the match situation.

Choose one focus for a short training block. If it is the opening phase, include movement of the ball and realistic preparation before the shot. If it is seven-metre decision-making, vary shooters and allow different releases at an appropriate intensity.

Review the first decision as carefully as the final contact. What did the goalkeeper observe? When did the movement begin? Could the goalkeeper still adjust?

Record outcomes, but avoid reaching a verdict based on the first few throws. Mandić’s early saves and Lepschi’s shoot-out contribution deserve attention because of what happened in those games. To learn from them, return to the specific demands of each situation.
